Devonport wins regeneration award

A Plymouth-based regeneration project has won a prestigious award at a ceremony in London for the success of its planning.

Devonport garnered the Sustainable Communities Award from the Royal Town Planning Institute for a proposed development, to be located on a 7.3 hectare plot.

The lauded project is set to feature some 450 new homes, as well as shops, offices and community facilities.

Planning applications for the project have also been submitted and the first 65 new homes are set to be built in October this year.

Matt Lally, who was responsible for preparing the Devonport planning, praised the way that locals had been given a chance to lend their opinions to the project.

"This just goes to show what can be achieved when the local community, government agencies and developers pull together with a common plan," he said.

David Warburton, area director at English Partnerships, a national regeneration agency, said he hoped the Devonport project would "set a precedent for sustainable regeneration in Plymouth".
