DIY blunders costing millions

Britons attempting to emulate home improvement television programmes have caused £350 million worth of damage to their homes, according to a new study.

Halifax Home Insurance has revealed that the 750,000 Britons who have damaged their properties in this manner pay an average of £484 in fixing the problems, due to homeowners often inaccurately believing they can carry out work of the standard seen in property TV shows.

Changing Rooms was voted the show most likely to encourage renovation efforts from Britons, polling 27 per cent of the vote, ahead of Property Ladder (22 per cent and DIY SOS (21 per cent).

"If you don't know what you're doing we'd advise anyone planning any major improvements that DIY should really stand for Don't Involve Yourself," commented Vicky Emmott from Halifax Home Insurance.

"Indeed trying to tackle certain areas that you are not qualified for, such as electrics or plumbing could invalidate your home insurance and leave you liable for the cost of any subsequent damage.

"It's far better to employ a reputable tradesman than to risk damaging your home by going it alone," Ms Emmott added.

Earlier this week Saga warned of the importance of informing insurers before beginning home improvements.
