DIY errors costly, says insurer

Halifax Home Insurance has stated that nearly 600,000 people have their homes damaged every year by DIY mistakes made by their neighbours.
The insurer said that on average 594,960 people are affected by calamities which include damage to pipes, walls and ornaments, costing £291 each time on average last year and a grand total of £173 million.
Head of underwriting at the firm David Rochester said: "A number of errant DIYers are not just damaging their properties, but their neighbours' homes too."
Such a trail of destruction suggests that those undertaking renovation work on their homes should seek professional help and advice on how to go about it to produce the best results and avoid any disasters.
Examples of opportunities for householders to access such expertise include the Scottish Homebuilding & Renovating Show, which will have around 140 firms specialising in this area when it is held on April 17th and 18th in Glasgow.
