DIY on TV 'boosts renovation'

Many people are planning to renovate their homes as a direct result of the plethora of TV programmes on the subject, new research has found.
A survey by Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans established that 73 per cent of those looking to carry out renovations gained the idea from watching programmes on the subject.
The list of most wanted home improvements include room redecorations (favoured by 54 per cent), a new bathroom suite (43 per cent) and new flooring or carpeting (41 per cent).
For those looking to add value to their houses, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has said the best move is a loft conversion, which can add £10,000 to a home, while a kitchen refit can add £8,000 and a new bathroom £4,000.
Nicholas Leeming from housing website propertyfinder.co.uk commented that garden improvements can help, adding: "People are also quite right in thinking that appropriate loft conversions will add value, as will any conversions that create additional living rooms, bedrooms or bathrooms."
Among the latest DIY programmes on TV is the new BBC production Staying Put, presented by interior designer Anna Ryder Richardson.
