DIY 'still highly popular'

DIY is still a hugely popular past time in the UK despite a growing interest in new build properties, the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has said.
NHIC technical consultant Andrew Leech noted that the rise in popularity in new build homes was not necessarily a precursor to interest in DIY.
Mr Leech added that, while it was important for those looking to extend their home or considering renovation not to overreach, many surprised themselves with the extent of their abilities.
"You've just got to look at the DIY figures to see how popular DIY is there are always new products, new ideas. I think this is all good news," Mr Leech commented.
"People have got to pace themselves, they've got to know their capabilities. If you're good at painting and decorating, and doing the odd bit of replacing timberwork and so on, that doesn't mean to say you're capable of doing a major extension.
"Having said that, we've found that there are people who have come out of the woodwork and found a hidden depth to themselves," Mr Leech added.
