Draught proofing 'most effective way of insulating a home'

The National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has said that draught proofing is the most cost-efficient way of insulating a property.
Such changes can have a significant effect on heating bills and can also boost a homeowner's chance of selling their home, NHIC noted.
It may take up to a day to install draught proofing without professional help, the organisation added, but the long-term savings would offset this effort.
"They say that, in the average semi-detached house, the gaps around doors and windows and elsewhere where air could get in is equivalent to a hole in the wall of [the size of] nine bricks," said NHIC technical consultant Andrew Leech.
"So just imagine sitting in your lounge with a hole that big in your wall. That's the amount of draught that's coming in to the average house.
"There are some really good brands of draught proofing on the market now, which you can buy from any of the DIY stores which can be fitted pretty quickly," Mr Leech added.
