Earthships to land in Brighton

In another carbon-cutting move, planning permission has been granted for 16 Earthships to be built in Brighton.

Bizarrely named, the Earthships are actually highly sustainable, low carbon buildings which are constructed from materials like old tyres and waste and can be used as homes.

There are only two in the UK at the moment but Earthships are very popular in Mexico after being invented by an architect called Mike Reynolds.

Thurstan Crockett, from Brighton & Hove Council, said: "This is just the sort of forward thinking scheme that Brighton & Hove should be championing.

"The Earthships are yet another example of the innovative sustainable buildings at which the city excels."

Located at Brighton Marina, they will be fitted out with wind turbines and will be independent of mains power and services. They harvest their own water from rain and use solar energy.
