Eco-homes 'too expensive for regular buyers'

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has suggested that while current homeowners aiming to do their bit to help the environment frequently look to green renovations, first-time buyers are unable to purchase eco-homes because of the price premium involved.
This is because the average price of an environmentally friendly property can be as much as £25,000 more than a regular home - something that is already putting first-time buyers off, according to the federation.
However, the FMB did note that the price of such properties will come down once they are built on a mass-scale in order to try and meet the government's zero-carbon target.
"At the moment, because they are not being done in a very large scale, it does cost considerably more to build an eco-friendly home, anything up to £25,000 on the initial price," advised an FMB spokesperson.
"Existing homeowners are making green improvements to their properties [...] there are things you can buy to make a difference to your property that can be quite cost effective; things like insulation. You can go down to your local DIY store and install it yourself," the spokesperson added.
