Eco-town faces opposition

Protests have been staged in Warwickshire by local residents opposed to the building of a new eco-town near Stratford-on-Avon.

Many living in local villages are opposed to the plans to build 6,000 new homes at the site of a former military base at Long Marston on the grounds that there will be more congestion and traffic pollution.

Last week Peter Luff, an MP in neighbouring Worcestershire, joined Stratford MP John Maples in declaring his opposition to the scheme, the Stratford Herald reported.

Mr Luff told a recent meeting that he was not against eco-towns in principle but did disagree with the way the government was going about the scheme.

The existence of such a protest could indicate that those hoping to live in an eco-home may find hopes of doing so by buying a house in such a town are stymied by local objections.

An alternative method could be to self build an eco home.
