Eco building materials for a solvent-free DIY session

With another bank holiday weekend coming up you might be keen to start getting to grips with home improvements and some DIY.
If so, then make sure you do it ethically with some of the following top tips from New Consumer ethical lifestyle magazine.
You may not be aware that paints and varnishes often emit volatile organic compounds which prevent walls from breathing, but using a non-toxic finish made from linseed oil or natural pigments means that your room is less likely to resemble a sweaty, plastic box.
Insulating renders and plasters can also be environmentally friendly if you buy ones that are made from lime, which is much more breathable than concrete.
Clay plaster and milk protein filler takes longer to dry but can be reworked in the future while water-based, biodegradable paint strippers are safer than their powerful solvent equivalents.
