Eco homes save money

Environmentally-friendly homes don''t just ease the effects of property development on the earth but they also ease the strain on homeowners'' wallets.

Residents at Fusion, which is a flagship eco development in Woking, say that they are already reaping the financial benefits of their new homes by making large savings on their energy bills.

Solar panels, heat pumps, insulation, double glazing and energy efficient light bulbs are all contributing to the homes becoming less dependent on traditional heating systems.

Alex Woodward, who lives in one of the homes, said: "My water bills have been halved and heating costs have decreased dramatically since moving from the old family home last year."

He added that something as simple as the inclusion of a water-butt in the garden helps to conserve and recycle rainwater and thus makes a big difference given the increasing restrictions during summer.

Another environmentally-friendly change that can be made to homes is to fit wind cowls on the roof which turn as the wind blows and provide ventilation without losing any heat.
