Ecohome shortlisted for housing prize

The carbon-saving ecohome from Camden Council has been shortlisted for the Low Energy Upgraded Social Housing Project of the Year prize from Inside Housing, it has been revealed

An experiment from University College London and Camden Council, the ecohome has seen a Victorian house undergo a range of improvements to reduce carbon emissions by up to 80 per cent, 24dash.com reports.

These include the installation of solar panels and solar hot-water heat recovery ventilation, the use of double-glazed windows, rainwater harvesting and floor and wall insulation and could give ideas to those considering the self build option or renovating their own home.

Councillor Chris Naylor, executive member for homes and housing strategy, said: "Sustainability is an absolute top priority for me, and I want Camden's housing to lead the way on climate change."

He added this encompasses reductions in fuel poverty as well as reduced emissions, both vital to local residents.

Last month, Norwich and Peterborough Building Society said the use energy-saving heating systems and super-efficient insulations can be used by homeowners to save money.
