The self build sector is one that could benefit from the property slump and economic decline, according to theHousePlanner.

Chris Martin, an architect at the firm, says that that the economic downturn has also led to people remaining in their existing homes and deciding to improve or adapt it to "suit their current needs".

"The toughening economic climate means that architects and builders will price jobs more keenly," Mr Martin claims.

Another added bonus of the current decline in the UK economy is that self builders or renovators could get their work done "more quickly" because of a downturn in the number of orders.

The National Association of Estate Agents recently reported that more than 90 per cent of its members thought that an extension could add value to a property.
