Experts advise on asbestos and DIY

When dealing with a home renovation you may come across or be concerned about asbestos.

Although the majority of UK homes contain asbestos there is only a danger of asbestos-related illness if people disturb it through DIY work, according to the Asbestos Information Centre.

It is the homes built before 1990 which are most at risk of stimulating such illness.

Mr Hutchinson, from the Asbestos Information Centre, said: "Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral which every human being on the planet breathes in. It is not something that people have to automatically panic about."

He advised that people only remove asbestos products when they are coming to the end of their run or work is being done in that area for some reason, otherwise the advice is to leave it be.

"Generally we say that only a home built after the very early nineties can we be 100 per cent sure doesn't contain asbestos. Anything built before then potentially still could," he added.
