Experts question £60k homes

Construction experts have questioned the £60,000 homes being built to meet affordable housing objectives put forward by the deputy prime minister.

Last year John Prescott challenged developers to build homes that could be sold at around £60,000 in a bid to help first time buyers get a foot on the property ladder.

One company, Redrow, has risen to this challenge and has been using new building methods to come up with a new range of affordable homes named Debut.

Starting at just £55,000 these new homes are available offplan to first time buyers. They range from studio apartments to small two bedroom family homes.

Built from lightweight steel frames and constructed off site, the flats and houses can be put together in just a few weeks.

But some construction companies have voiced concerns over these homes, with many claiming they are badly designed, badly constructed and box-like.

However consumers seem to think differently, with the demand for Redrow''s Debut homes growing fast. Indeed new developments are usually sold out within days as first time buyers scramble to buy something they can actually afford.
