First-time buyers in the UK are becoming an endangered species, it has been claimed.

A poll by the New Homes Marketing Board (NHMB) showed that over 80 per cent of the population are concerned that the next generation will never be able to get into homeownership, Firstrung reports.

Commenting on the findings, NHMB chairman David Pretty stated: "Our polls already show that most people understand that the difficulties faced by first-time buyers is turning them into an endangered species and actually amounts to a serious social problem."

He said it was also likely that rents as well as house prices could go up as land became increasingly scarce in the future.

Such a prospect may prompt some to seek the self build solution to the issue.

Earlier this week a survey by Abbey found that nearly two-thirds of aspiring first-time buyers had put their house buying plans on the back-burner this year.
