First Scottish luxury eco-home unveiled

Plans for the first luxury eco-house have been unveiled by a Scottish home builder called Stewart Milne Group.

The firm has designed a prototype house which meets zero carbon requirements set down in the government''s Code for Sustainable Homes document and comprises a wind turbine, solar chimney and water-saving devices.

Combined, the green contraptions cut down on carbon emissions and maximise the home''s energy efficiency.

Glen Allison, from the company, said: "Our decision to create this potentially five-star house as a commercial reality gives us the opportunity to show key influencers in the housing sector that it is feasible to build low carbon houses in an affordable fashion."

He added that homes account for 27 per cent of the UK''s greenhouse gas emissions so it is up to home builders to take the lead on slowing down climate change.

The government aims to make all new builds zero carbon by 2016 while environmental campaigners Friends of the Earth welcomed the prototype.
