Flat-pack housing scheme in second project

A second housing development in the north-east involving flat-pack houses is under way, it has been reported.

Following the groundbreaking project in Gateshead last year, the company behind the eco-friendly Scandinavian-style homes, Live Smart@Home, is implementing a second project in the Hendon district of Sunderland, the Green Building Press reports.

The homes, known as BokLok, were designed by furniture company Ikea and meet the eco homes "excellent" rating.

Such homes may be the construction of choice for those thinking of self building their own homes, with the benefit of ensuring these dwellings are low-carbon.

In the meantime, research aimed at discovering more ways of making construction as green as possible has been backed by the prime minister.

Gordon Brown told the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) he welcomed the Building a Greener Britain campaign, commenting that he was pleased with the efforts it was making to find new ways to "support the building industry to build and retrofit homes to higher environmental standards".

The FMB director of external affairs said in response that the research it was carrying out would lead to new recommendations for the government and building industry.
