Flat packs good, local build better, says FMB

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has said that flat packs homes offer a number of new advantages for those looking to build new houses.
Director of external affairs for the FMB Brian Berry acknowledged that the new technology offered "new innovations in building design and green technology," something eco-conscious people looking to self build their homes may be interested in.
However, he argued, using flat pack homes did have one disadvantage in terms of carbon footprints as they would have to be manufactured and then transported around the country by road.
In contrast, he said, FMB members tended to be more sustainable "because they're employing local people, not travelling huge distances and where possible using local building materials".
Those considering the self build of their properties may also consider taking the greener option of sourcing materials locally.
Britain's first flat-pack homes, created through a partnership between IKEA and Live Smart @ Home, went on display in Gateshead in late January.
