Flatpack homes hit the shelves

The arrival of self build flat-pack housing in the UK has been heralded by Swedish furniture company Ikea, with a public display of the first such houses to be assembled in Britain.

A block of flats made from BoKlok homes in St James's Village near Gateshead has gone on view, Reuters reports.

Most of the 93 flats have already been sold, a spokesman for Live Smart @ Home, which has teamed up with Ikea in the project, has said.

The prices for homes in the complex are £99,500 for a one-bedroom flat and £149,995 for a three-bedroom home, less than their normal equivalent-sized homes.

Such structures may provide a future option for those planning to construct their own homes to get on the housing ladder.

Launched in Sweden by Ingvar Kamprad in 1943, Ikea opened its first UK store in 1987 in Warrington, Cheshire.
