Flats and terraced homes overtaking detached houses

Due to a surfeit of demand for too few affordable properties in the UK, there has been an increase in the amount of flats, maisonettes and terraced properties.

According to the latest statistics from the National Home Building Council (NHBC), these sorts of properties made up 44 per cent of all homes started in the last three months. Which is double the amount started in 2000.

"The drive for more affordable homes is being intensified by the number of first time buyers and a rise in the number of people living alone," said Imtiaz Farookhi, from the NHBC.

"This has led to a shift away from traditional semi-detached and detached homes towards a greater number of flats, maisonettes and traditional terraced housing schemes."

Some 20 per cent of all new homes started were terraced houses which is higher than the statistics for both semi-detached and detached properties.
