Flats dominate some cities, figures show

New research has shown how much some localities in the UK are dominated by flats, which tend to offer less space and fewer bedrooms.

A study by Nationwide has found that overall such dwellings make up 16 per cent of homes and 14 per cent of sales.

However, this figure varies widely, the east Midlands being the lowest region with just four per cent of sales being flats, compared with 44 per cent for greater London.

Nationwide noted that this was consistent with London's higher population density, with the most crowded inner London boroughs being up to 80 per cent flats.

Glasgow and Edinburgh had an even higher proportion of flats at 60 per cent, but Scottish flats do tend to be larger, the study found.

On average a UK flat has 1.7 rooms, meaning that those looking for somewhere with more space may have top look elsewhere, one option being self build.

Those particularly keen on the idea may be those living in London, where Nationwide found the average flat price is £242,552.

Such a figure contrasts with the starting price of £115,000 for new flats in the Park Apartments development in the West End of Glasgow, reported in the Daily Record last month.
