Flood-proof home praised by experts

A new home designed to resist floods has been commended by experts, it has been reported.

The Salt House in Essex has been given the thumbs up by experts despite its location by the sea, with experts warning that global warming may lead to sea level rises of up to 58 cm, the Independent reports.

Named one of the best houses in the world by World Architecture News, the structure is built on stilts, meaning it cannot be inundated or undermined by floodwaters, a fact which has led to it being hailed by the Royal Institute of British Architects as "breathtaking in the rigour of its design, detailing and execution".

Those considering the self build option may be keen to avoid the risk of flood damage either by buying land which is not at risk or using materials and design methods that make the building itself safe from being swamped.

Earlier this week, the government confirmed that thousands of the families affected by floods in England last summer had not yet been able to return home, the BBC reported.
