Floods 'will not hinder brownfield development'

Floods

The severe flooding that took place across many parts of the country last month will not prevent brownfield redevelopment work from continuing, it has been advised.

Knight Frank Midlands residential development head David Fenton has said that brownfield sites were not part of the problem, but rather that they provided an invaluable way of securing land for housing.

However, Mr Fenton added that flood risk assessments were still required in appropriate cases and that such tests would be taken into consideration.

"The government’s target of 60 per cent of new developments to be built on previously developed land and through conversion of existing buildings has been met eight years ahead of schedule, and there is no sign of this slowing down," Mr Fenton commented.

"The regeneration of brownfield sites will continue unaffected by the recent events," he added.

Gordon Brown announced earlier this year that 550 brownfield sites currently owned by the public sector would be released for housing developments.
