Fly tipping builder receives £1,000 fine

A builder who worked in Wendover in Buckinghamshire has been severely fined for dumping and burning building waste in an old plum orchard.

Christopher Warren was fined £1,000 for the offence which took place in January this year. He was seen driving a lorry load of building waste including uPVC window frames and carpet underlay waste which he fly-tipped down a dead end.

A policeman spotted him and watched Mr Warren then take his lorry down a bridleway to an old plum orchard where he set fire to further waste.

Mr Warren claimed that he had permission from the land owner to do this but the land owner said he had no idea that Mr Warren was setting fire to waste in his uncropped plum orchard.

Magistrates at Aylesbury Magistrates Court fined him severely because he was deemed to know the law, given that he had been a builder for many years.

Fly tipping is illegal but practised because some people try to avoid landfill tax. If you come across waste you should report it to your local environment agency rather than touching it yourself as it may be hazardous.
