Gardens 'can help add value to a home'

Homeowners hoping to make a profit when they sell should not underestimate the importance of their garden, an expert has advised.

Lucy Hall, deputy editor of BBC Gardeners' World Magazine, explains greenery can help create "the right impression to viewers".

She claims sellers boasting larger gardens can add up to 20 per cent to the overall property price with a well-trimmed lawn and neat hedge.

Additionally, Ms Hall adds: "In the back garden, a generous paved or decked area for outdoor dining is a must these days, as we?re all increasingly moving our living space outside."

Garden sheds are also a recommended property investment as they "keep down the clutter and definitely add value".

According to recent research by Lloyds TSB Insurance, the most popular three items on consumers' garden wish list are a hot tub, decking and water features.
