Gardens make homes more attractive, TCPA advises

The Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) has said that homes become much more attractive and environmentally sensitive when they have gardens.

Speaking of the development of new homes on brownfield land, TCPA communications manager Kate Henderson said: "Homes with gardens attract people. Green space is not only important in creating desirable housing, it is also integral to more environmental design."

While such comments were concerned with creating attractive community areas where brownfields were developed into new housing areas, such principles may also be applied to self build homes or houses being renovated, where the provision of a good garden may not only make the home more pleasant for the initial occupant to live in, but could also add to its attraction and increase its price if and when it is sold on.

An article in the Times this week stated that by creating attractive gardens homeowners could add up to £50,000 to the value of their houses.
