''Go green'' on a shoestring

Homeowners are to be advised that developing and living in an environmentally friendly household needn''t cost the earth.
As part of the Scottish Homebuilding and Renovating Show, set to take place at the SECC in Glasgow on May 12th and 13th, more than 150 exhibitors will be discussing home design and renovation and offering hints on how to run a more energy and cost efficient home.
According to the show''s organisers, installing the means of sourcing alternative forms of energy, while costly in the short-term, will be highly beneficial over the long-term.
The instillation of solar panels at an average cost of £2,000, for example, will usually provide sufficient hot water all year round, while a rainwater harvesting system for £1,500 will all significantly reduce future water bills.
Recently the Liberal Democrats in Scotland announced that they aim to provide £155 million worth of wind turbines for low-income families as part of its latest blueprint for renewable energy.
