Government 'could build on green belt'

The board of a governmental advisory body is to meet today to discuss land supply issues that will involve "a mature examination of green belt principles", according to media reports.
Natural England will meet to discuss the possibility of replacing the concept of a green belt with a so-called "green infrastructure", which would see some areas of the green belt become more fragmented, the Guardian has reported.
While the paper in question acknowledges that some areas of the green belt should remain free from development, including flood plains and gaps between communities, it notes that environmentally-friendly housing schemes could be implemented in some areas.
However, a government spokesperson denied that any changes were on the way.
"Our position at the moment is that we are not planning any changes to the robust rules which protect the green belt," the spokesperson said, according to the Guardian.
Earlier this month the Campaign to Protect Rural England warned that the green belt in Yorkshire was under threat from building policies.
