Government 'should support green renovations'

The government should help tackle the problem of climate change through the housing sector, according to an environment group.
Friends of the Earth has said that the potential opportunity to tackle climate change in this way is "enormous" and has called on the government to support greener house building projects.
"The government should support it [tackling climate change] by helping homes to save energy and install low-carbon energy systems such as solar panels, as part of its plans for tackling global warming," said Friends of the Earth's Low Carbon Homes campaigner, Ed Matthew.
Mr Matthew also urged the government to "get serious about renewable energy", claiming that the Low Carbon Buildings Programme has been "an unmitigated disaster".
The campaigner added that the programme needs to be ten times bigger than it currently is and called for funding to reach a billion pounds, if the programme is going to make an impact.
Earlier this week, the Town and Country Planning Association launched a guide on low carbon futures in association with the Combined Heat and Power Association.
