Government target 'is achievable '

Government target

The government's aim of building 240,000 new homes a year by 2016 is "achievable", according to a major new report on the proposals.

The Callcutt Review has said that the target is challenging but able to be met, though issues remain over when and where new homes will be built and how to incorporate zero-carbon targets.

Responding to the report, the Home Builders Federation (HBF) has said that John Callcutt was right to highlight the supply of land as a central issue.

"Housebuilders have the all the tools at their disposal to deliver – all we ask for is the land to make these new homes happen," said HBF executive chairman Stewart Baseley.

"I particularly welcome the debunking of the myth of ‘landbanking.’ Homebuilders are doing all they can to build the homes necessary to meet consumer demand, and meet Government targets," Mr Baseley added.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England, meanwhile, has welcomed the focus on building in urban areas and called for more homes to be built on brownfield land.
