Government's eco-build aspirations 'best met by self-builders'

Those who want to self build their own eco-homes are the best placed to fulfil the government's aspirations of making house building more eco-friendly, it has been suggested.
Julian Brooks, managing director of eco-building firm Green Moves said that a recent report by the Green Building Council on the feasibility of achieving zero carbon homes had ignored the self build factor.
This was an error, he suggested, because: "Self-builders are probably the best placed to take forward the government's aspirations, more so than perhaps than the industry itself."
He stated that this was because self builders have greater flexibility in approach, more interest in the outcome and do not have to consider other issues in the way that professional building firms do, such as cost and potential resale values.
Last week a study by Knight Frank and EC Harris showed that 59 per cent of buyers would pay more for an eco-friendly home, the Daily Telegraph reported.
