Grants for homes vulnerable to flooding

More vulnerable homes in the UK will be made more resilient to the threat of flooding after the government announced a new £500,000 funding package.

The Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, Ian Pearson, announced the package yesterday and said it is designed to help the 470,000 properties in this country which are at risk of flooding.

They will be offered grants to make improvements to their properties such as getting waterproof render and temporary door guards. Water resistant walls and floors plus money to fund raising electrics from low-lying areas will also be offered.

"With climate change, it's more important than ever that householders know about, understand and can access the options that are available to them to help minimise the damage that can be caused by flooding," said Mr Pearson.

He added that providing better information and advice for householders on how to respond to flood risk is an important part of our strategy to reduce flood risk to people and property.

The government is working with the insurance industry to give people guidance on incorporating flood management measures in their homes.
