Green budget pledge misses point, says TCPA

The Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) has said that chancellor Alistair Darling has missed an opportunity to help new homes contribute to increased emissions reduction targets.

In his speech today Mr Darling stated there would be an investigation into the feasibility of increasing Britain's carbon reduction target by 2050 from 60 per cent to 80 per cent, but the TCPA noted that he did not commit to a German style "feed-in tariff" which would reward those who produce their own electricity.

He said: "The feed-in tariff in Germany massively stimulated the market for renewables in the housing stock - it could and should do so in the UK."

Those engaged in the self build of their homes may wish to include microgeneration devices as part of the structure.

In its reaction to the budget, the Federation of Master Builders criticised the lack of a cut in VAT for home renovations.
