Green energy demand ''soaring''

Demand for green energy is soaring so much among the UK public that many of the UK''s biggest firms are apparently running short of supply.



Firms like EDF Energy, Scottish Power, Ecotricity, npower and British Gas are all running low on green fuel because demand has grown so rapidly over recent years. Some firms have even asked that customers only take some power from green fuels.



Jim Butler, from EDF Energy, said: "We''re looking after existing customers and allowing them to renew their contracts.



"[For new customers] we have low carbon energy available which is levy exempt, but not much green."



At the moment about five per cent of the UK''s energy comes from renewable sources although the government has set aside another few millions for more microgeneration grants in this week''s Budget.



This means that some people will be able to apply for a pot of money with which to buy their own wind turbines or solar panels.
