Green homes to be built over prefabs

Work on new green homes that will replace Second World War prefabs in an area of Cambridgeshire has begun.
A total of 28 concrete homes in Sawston are to be demolished and replaced with eco-friendly homes as part of a £4.8 million redevelopment of the site, reports the Saffron Walden Reporter.
South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) and developers Circle Anglia have joined forces to build the new homes that will offer numerous benefits over the 1940s buildings, which suffered from dampness as well as poor insulation. The new 44 properties will be available for rent as well as through shared ownership schemes and open market sales.
Councillor Deborah Roberts, SCDC''s housing portfolio holder, welcomed the project and stressed the need for more affordable homes in the region.
"Providing more affordable housing is a SCDC priority and I''m delighted that this development is moving ahead," said Ms Roberts.
She added: "The difficulties of getting onto the housing ladder are well known, and SCDC is working hard with its partners, including Circle Anglia, to complete 300 new affordable houses across the district in 2007."
