Green roofs to take off in UK
Growing what is known as a green roof on your home may cut your council tax bill soon, according to the government housing minister.
Yvette Cooper said that the idea has taken off in Germany and could help combat climate change.
Green roofs involve putting waterproof fabric, soil, stones, grass and alpine plants onto flat roofs. They absorb rainwater, encourage wildlife and cool buildings in the summer as well as insulating them in winter.
Ms Cooper said she was looking into financial incentives for environmental home improvements.
She said: "There is great potential to link energy performance certificates with green mortgages where home buyers could get top-up loans at preferential rates."
Energy performance certificates will be required for all houses bought and sold next year and will detail the energy efficiency of each property.
Many people are self-building their green roof and the main consideration is to ensure your roof is strong enough to support the weight of plants and turf.
