Green solutions 'easier to implement' in larger developments

The UK Green Building Council has said that building eco-friendly developments on a wider scale will ultimately prove more beneficial to the environment because of the way they can incorporate more advanced technologies.

The council has said that it welcomes the government's recently-announced intention to double the number of planned eco-towns from five to ten because of this fact, adding that it is relatively difficult to build just one carbon-neutral home.

With larger developments, problems in making use of residual energy are less apparent, the council added.

"If you're building 10,000 [homes] then you can build community heat and power stations; you could have biomass heating you could have a wind turbine which would all serve the whole community and when you are building on a larger scale, it's easier to incorporate energy solutions into the plans," commented UK Green Building Council public affairs manager John Alker.

Mr Alker added that while the cost of building such a property would be greater than usual, the long term financial benefits in terms of lower energy bills should help compensate for such upfront fees.
