Greenbelt homes under threat

A proposal to build new homes on a greenbeltsite in Cumbria are facing strong opposition, it has been reported.

Over 100 locals have registered their opposition to a plan to construct 1,130 homes on a site near Ulverston in the South Lakeland district, the North West Evening Mail reports.

Local councillor Brian Wilkinson, who chaired the meeting in a pub in the town, told the paper: "These pieces of land have been highlighted for potential development by people who don't know the area as well as those who live here."

Some objectors have suggested local brownfield land is used instead and the council has said it will publish possible alternatives.

The Campaign to Protection Rural England claimed that an area of greenbelt the size of a small city has been built on since the present government came into power in 1997, the Daily Telegraph reported earlier this month.
