HBF calls for focus on land supply

Proposals to increase the number of houses built by 2020 have been welcomed by the Home Builders Federation (HBF).

In her speech to the nation, the Queen confirmed that the government was committed to building three million more homes, including those in the social housing sector, and with an emphasis on quality design, environmental concerns and popular environments.

HBF executive chairman Stewart Baseley said that the proposals were "good news" but were "long overdue".

"Above all, we now need to unlock the land needed to build the homes on the scale required across the country."

He said the federation also welcomed opportunities to develop more environmentally friendly homes by building ten eco-towns.

Following the Queen's speech, more than 50 applications for new eco-towns have been received from across the UK, the givernment has said.

Education and health joined housing at the top of prime minister Gordon Brown's agenda for supporting the "rising aspirations" of the British people.
