HBF calls for specialised Cabinet housing position

The Home Builders Federation (HBF) has called for Gordon Brown to prove his environmental credentials by creating a new cabinet role for a minister dedicated to overseeing housing-related green issues.

HBF executive chairman Stewart Baseley has said that the incoming prime minister should look to address housing issues as a matter of priority.

The federation has issued a mini-manifesto outlining what it believes are key aims, including the implementation of a less complex planning system and making more land available.

"HBF is also putting forward a number of proposals in a mini-manifesto, which if adopted by Gordon Brown, will help to address the chronic shortage of over 60,000 homes per year facing this country. Chief amongst these is the need to bring forward more land with implementable planning permission, in order for developers to be able to provide all types of home across the market to meet the needs of consumers," Mr Baseley commented.

Meanwhile the HBF has also advised that it is still committed to working with the forthcoming Home information packs (Hips).
