History remembered in planning legislation

The government is to put history at the forefront of its planning legislation, according to its latest white paper entitled Heritage Protection for the 21st Century.
Tessa Jowell, the minister for culture, media and sport, published the paper which proposed simplifying the regulations around the current heritage protection system so that the public are more involved and it is fully integrated into the planning system.
Ms Jowell said: "Our built heritage and historic environment matter to us all.
"The heritage protection system is about how we protect and sustain it, both for today and for generations to come."
The public may be able to suggest new ideas for buildings to be listed and would also include archaeological remains in the marine environment or on cultivated land.
This follows European criticism of plans to build the Shard of Glass building in London because it would change the view of the Tower of London from Embankment.
