Home improvement scheme wins award

A home improvement scheme in Kent has won a prestigious national award for its success in working with different organisations to help vulnerable residents feel safe in their own homes.

HomeSafe, which is aimed at elderly and disabled people, won the Best Partnership Working Award from Foundations, the national coordinating body for home improvement agencies in England.

The Kent-based scheme is designed to improve safety and security for those who are eligible by installing security devices and carrying out minor modifications in their homes.

The free service, which is funded by Kent County Council, sees the fitting of window locks, door locks and safety chains as well as smoke alarms and other such appliances.

It also provides expert crime prevention advice to help vulnerable people minimise their chances of becoming victims of burglary.

HomeSafe collaborates with a number of different organisations to deliver its free services, including Kent Fire and Rescue Service, Help The Aged and British Gas.

Last year it installed over 5,000 pieces of security equipment in more than 2,000 homes across Kent. It also carried out over 2,700 home adaptations.
