Shopping "with a conscience" is getting more popular as the twin issues of climate change and social responsibility grow in prominence in the UK, according to one expert.

A bank which offers green mortgages has said that Brits are getting increasingly aware of their own individual role in combating climate change and this is reflected in their consumer behaviour.

Andy Hammerton, from the Co-Operative Bank, said: "In a whole broad range of sectors, I think people are becoming more ready to shop with their conscience.

"And that is from green mortgages, to the way they shop in the supermarket."

He added that there are incentives for going green which also spur on consumers. Things like double glazing can save people money but also makes homes become more energy efficient which benefits the environment.

Zero carbon new builds will be exempt from stamp duty payments according to Chancellor Gordon Brown in his latest Budget.
