Homeowners 'foregoing dream homes'

Homeowners are abandoning their dream homes in favour of simply getting onto the property ladder, new research has revealed.
A study from Alliance & Leicester has found that just five per cent of adult Britons are living in their dream homes, with many professing complete indifference when questioned about emotional attachments to their property.
Londoners were the least happy with their homes, with just three per cent giving their property full marks on a scale from one to ten.
The preponderance of new flats being built means homeowners face a struggle to find the space they need in the city, the study implies.
"It's not just the house that we live in that we aspire to buy, it's also the location. Some house buyers are also clearly willing to sacrifice a home with a thatched roof, large garden or open plan living area, to live in a particular location," advised Alliance & Leicester director of mortgages Stephen Leonard.
More homeowners are turning to home improvements to upgrade their property in terms of value, the Halifax Home Improvement Survey found last month.
