Homeowners pushing for microgeneration grants

The Low Carbon Buildings Programme introduced on April 1st 2006 has captured the imagination of homeowners looking to install microgeneration technologies, the Ecology Building Society has said.

The government scheme has already received 2,865 applications, with almost £7 million being contributed to initiatives including the likes of wind turbines and ground source heat pumps thus far.

Ecology said that it had been "inundated with requests" and proclaimed the initiative a success.

"From what I have heard they can't keep up with the enquiries they've been having for grants and there is not enough money available for everyone that wants them - so it has been more than successful," noted Ecology Building Society marketing manager Jenny Irwin.

"People who are doing newbuilds have the advantage of being able to incorporate energy saving measures and renewable energy technologies into the build as they are building, so their costs are reduced," Ms Irwin added.

The building society itself specialises in lending to environmentally-friendly properties, and currently has over 10,000 existing accounts.
