Homeowners to spend £150 billion on home improvement

Aspirational Britons have plans to spend a collective £153 billion on home improvement projects in the future, according to new research carried out by Halifax Home Insurance.

The group''s figures show that some 11 million homes are mooting the undertaking of a project, at an average cost of £13,800.

Gardens were identified as the most attractive part of a homeowner''s plot to transform, with over a quarter mooting a makeover.

While approximately a sixth were considering making alternations to the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens in their building as well as double glazing and loft conversions, were also seen as an attractive proposition.

Vicky Emmott, Halifax Home Insurance''s senior manager of underwriting, said that while "well planned and executed" improvements could increase the value of a plot, property owners needed to make sure they employed honest and skilled tradespeople.
