Homes acclaimed as Britain's greenest

Homes acclaimed as Britain

Two homes in a Surrey village have been hailed as the most eco friendly in Britain.

Built to an eco rating of five, just one level below zero carbon, the two flats in the village of South Nutfield were built on brownfield land in an initiative backed by the Housing Corporation and Raven Housing Trust, Tandridge council has announced.

Elements contained in the homes include biomass pellets, high levels of insulation, triple glazing and photovoltaic panels.

The project was part of a plan to establish a standard for homes that were both affordable and eco friendly.

Director of community services at the council Richard Woodward said: "We hope this sets the standard for affordable homes."

Those wanting to obtain an eco home at an affordable price may seek to do so using the self build method.

Recently Julian Brooks, managing director of eco homes firm Green Moves, said self build houses have "always been greener than new house building from developers" because the latter have not shown enough commitment to green building to satisfy the eco standards self builders aspire to.
