House price hits £100,000 in every UK county

Another UK property price milestone has been reached with the average house price breaking through the £100,000 barrier for the first time, according to one banking group.

Research by the Halifax has found that the mean price throughout every county in the UK has now surpassed £100,000 with areas in Wales and Scotland seeing the largest increases in house prices.

This is compared to 63 out of 101 counties in 2001 having an average price under £100,000.

Merthyr Tydfil, regenerated Welsh ex-mining town, saw the biggest rises with a 175 per cent price gain over five years from £45,578 to £125,450.

Meanwhile Welsh relatives Blaenau Gwent, which is close to the ex-host of the Garden Festival of Wales Ebbw Vale and the Rhondda, also saw large gains.

In contrast, the south of England showed the smallest rises in prices although Surrey still retains it title as the most expensive county in the UK with an average price of £328,453.

It seems the fastest growing areas still remain reasonable for property buyers with Blaenau Gwent being the most inexpensive place at an average house price of £107,451.
