Householders given rogue builder warning

Householders who look to hire builders to perform DIY tasks could be leaving themselves open to damage to their properties on top of extra costs if they are not vigilant in the matter, it has been advised.

The National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has said that rogue builders were still very much in existence, and urged caution.

Recent years have seen cowboy building practices highlighted on a range of consumer television programmes, but the NHIC is still eager to counsel homeowners on potential errors.

"There is still this big phenomenon of cowboy builders around, who can really cause tremendous harm. And heartache as well, because not only do you not end up with the job you wanted; you also end up paying a fortune for it as well," advised, NHIC consultant Andrew Leech.

However, the growing number of homeowners opting to make their own renovations and improvements may mean that many are able to avoid such misfortune.
